Legislative Action Report
HJR 8, a resolution to put a constitutional DOMA on the November ballot, was tabled on a 5-2 vote.
Please call these Representatives and leave a message thanking them for voting to table HJR 8:
Chairwoman Rep. Gail Chasey, (505) 986-4844
Rep. Al Park, (505) 986-4411
Rep. Karen Gianinni, (505) 986-4234
Rep. Moe Maestas, (505) 986-4464
Rep. Bill O'Neill, (505) 986-4254
We got to test a few talking points on a small crowd. If you missed it, there may be another chance to participate coming up--It's still possible that the Senate Judiciary Committee will hear Sen. Sharer's identical resolution. We'll be in touch if we need your phone calls or presence!

Senator Cisco McSorley, longtime advocate of civil rights for LGBT New Mexicans, has once again introduced a pro-equality bill. We expect it to be ruled 'not germane' by the Senate Rules Committee. If it is found to be 'germane', or related to the Governor's call for legislation, we'd then expect it to be voted down in the Senate Public Affairs Committee. Of course, if any information indicates that it might be heard, we'll let you know!
Once again, Sen. Bill Sharer and Rep. Nora Espinoza have introduced constitutional amendments to redefine marriage in NM. Constitutional amendments need not be related to the session's call, and don't require a signature from the Governor.
For the proposed amendment to become the law, it would have to pass through committee and floor votes in both sides of the Roundhouse. If that happened, it would go onto the next ballot for a vote. We will email an alert whenever this amendment is going to be heard in its first committee.
